The success of WhatsApp is a bit of a miracle. Despite lacking any ties to an existing platform or major service, the messaging app managed to grab the interest of smartphone users in a way few other apps have, and the massive user base it grew to command was enough to convince Facebook to spend a jaw-dropping $19B acquiring the company last year. In the time since then, we’ve seen WhatsApp expand beyond text to also offer voice support, and now new rumors claim that WhatsApp is looking into taking the next logical step, with the introduction of video calls.
While the evidence you see above suggests a pretty basic video call implementation, without a lot of extra window dressing, the core functionality appears to be there, and the source suggests that WhatsApp may be ready to introduce the feature to the public within the next few weeks.
In addition to the video call mode, we also hear that WhatsApp could be getting a new tabbed interface for its conversations, while simultaneously implementing a new look for the app’s UI – one where shades of green dominate the layout. Unfortunately, we don’t have any leaked screenshots of this stuff just yet, but if the new release is coming as soon as this source claims it is, we should be getting a look in no time at all.
