Sony surprised us at Mobile World Congress with a new lineup of Xperia X smartphones set to launch this summer. We still don’t know exactly when the phones will arrive in the U.S., but the first details are already trickling in.
The company recently updated its U.S. website, offering the option to pre-register for the Xperia X and Xperia X Performance. It’s unclear whether the new phones will be available directly from Sony or through a carrier. Either way you can sign up online to get more information ahead of the official release late this year.
Sony also seemingly confirmed on Facebook that the Xperia X series will replace its old flagship lineup. When asked about plans for an Xperia Z6, the company’s German division revealed that “there will be no Z6.”
Thankfully, the new Xperia X devices seem like a pretty good alternative. We really can’t wait to get our hands on the powerful Xperia X Performance, which packs a Snapdragon 820 chip, a 23-megapixel rear camera and expandable storage in a sleek metal frame. Our only real complaint is that these new phones don’t include a water-resistant design, but hopefully Sony can bring that feature back with its next release.
